Stage set for gala I-Day celebrations

Full dress-rehearsals for the  72nd Independence Day celebrations were held at  YPS Stadium in the city on Monday. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kumar Amit, while inspecting the full dress-rehearsals, along with Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mandeep Singh Sidhu, said, Rural Development and Panchayats, Housing and Urban Development Minister, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, will unfurl the flag on August 15.

The DC informed that 11 teams, including those of India Tibet Border Police (ITBP), District Patiala Police, Punjab Police men and Women Wings, Home Guard team, along other teams will participate in the parade which will be commanded by DSP (Probational) Mohit Aggarwal. 

The DC informed that a team formed under the Buddies Group programme will also take part in the parade. The group is working against the drug abuse in the state. 

The parade will be followed by a tableau presentation of development and welfare schemes, while schoolchildren will present cultural programmes, including  bhangra, giddha and gatka. He said loan-waiver certificates, certificates to beneficiaries of the Mahatma Gandhi Sarbatt Vikas Yojana, wheelchairs, tricycles sewing machines to the needy will also be given on the day.

DC Kumar Amit said people should participate in the Independence Day celebrations which is the best way to show respect to the martyrs of the land. “We should celebrate the day like a festival,” he said.
