Yet another life was lost due to the stray cattle menace here when a Dera Bassi youth’s bike collided with an animal that darted across the road on Friday night. The deceased has been identified as Bhushan Singh Rana, a resident of Bhukri village near Dera Bassi.

According to the police, the incident took place around 10 pm when the victim was heading home after finishing his work in Mohali. As he crossed the Chhat traffic light point and reached the 200ft road near Jashan Dhaba, a stray cattle suddenly came on the road and collided with his bike. Rana fell off the bike with his head hitting the road. He was rushed to the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Investigating officer Onkar Singh said inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC had been initiated at the Zirakpur police station. The body was handed over to the family after a postmortem examination.

A relative of the deceased told the police that Rana was working with an HDFC Bank branch in Phase VII of Mohali and had joined the service five months ago. He was engaged to a girl and their marriage was scheduled for February next year.

Rana was youngest in the family. He left behind his elder sister and a brother besides parents.

Residents alleged that the authorities concerned failed to check the stray cattle menace even as incidents involving stray bulls had been occurring in the town at regular intervals.
