Students suffer as teachers strike work

PATIALA:Students studying in Punjabi University and affiliated colleges are suffering as teachers associated with the Punjabi University Contractual Teachers Association (PUCTA) striking work, demanding full pay scale, for more than 13 days now.

Patiala, October 13

Students studying in Punjabi University and affiliated colleges are suffering as teachers associated with the Punjabi University Contractual Teachers Association (PUCTA) striking work, demanding full pay scale, for more than 13 days now.

One of the contractual teachers said, “Of the total nine teachers appointed at a college in Sardulgarh, only two are regular, while others are contractual.” Similar cases could be witnessed in a majority of affiliated colleges, the teacher said.

Another teacher said, “While the rule says 70 per cent of teachers need to be regular and the rest can be on contract, the university seems to be following just the opposite.”

Prof Rupinder, one of the contractual teachers, said, “We have held meetings with the administration which have not reaped positive results. We will wait for another day and will strengthen our struggle from Monday with definitive steps.” — TNS
