Suraj R Prabodh lived up to his billing as he packed off Delhi’s Shivam Dalmia in straight sets to stay on course for the final in The Tribune State Tennis Championship at the CLTA Complex, Sector 10, here, on Wednesday. The top seed from Karnataka won 6-1 6-4 to march into the semifinals. 

Fifth seed VM Ranjeet of Tamil Nadu registered a 6-3 6-4 win over Maharashtra’s Sahil Gaware, while sixth seed Kunal Anand of Delhi moved into the semifinals after third seed Mohit Mayur of Tamil Nadu retired midway through their quarterfinal match. Anand was leading 6-2 1-0 when Mayur decided to quit.

Delhi’s Jatin Dahiya surprised fourth seed Ishaque Eqbal of West Bengal in a closely contested quarterfinal.  

Dahiya won the opening set 7-6(2), but Eqbal came back into the match with a 6-3 win in the second set. Dahiya, though, regained his composure and sealed the decider 6-0 to ensure a place in the last-four.

Sai Samhitha moves ahead

In the women’s singles, top seed Sai Samhitha of Tamil Nadu entered the semifinals after Prathyusha Rachapudi of Andhra Pradesh quit midway through their quarterfinal match. 

Prathyusha after winning the opening set 6-3 was lagging 0-5 in the second set when she decided to concede the match.

Farat Aleen Qamar of Rajasthan upset eighth seed Vanshita Pathania of Karnataka 6-4 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Third seed Prathiba Narayan of Karnataka downed state-mate Sonashi Bhatnagar 6-4 6-1, while second seed Humera Shaik of Telangana prevailed over Uttar Pradesh’s Kaavya Sawhney to move into the semifinals.

Humera lost the first set 6-7(4), but came back strongly to win the next two sets 6-4 6-3 to stay alive in the competition. 

Abhay eases into semis

Top seed Abhay Mohan of Chandigarh, meanwhile, registered a 6-3 6-4 win over seventh seed Harmanjot Singh of Punjab to book a berth in the boys’ U-16 semifinals.

Shubham Kundu of Karnataka edged out eighth seed Parth Goel of Chandigarh 6-2 6-3. Another local challenger, Amitoj Singh drubbed city-mate Shreyvir 6-0 6-2 to move into the semifinals. Sixth seed Aryan Thakur drubbed Tourus Rawat of Uttarakhand 6-2 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

Riya, Aditi advance

In the girls’ U-16 quarterfinals, top seed Riya Kaushik dispatched eighth seed Snigdha Sran 6-1 6-3, while Amreen Sidhu stunned third seed Pawandeep Kaur 6-3 6-2.

Fourth seed Radhika Vasudeva dumped Jyotsana Yadav 6-1 6-1 to move into the semifinals, while second seed Aditi Singh of Haryana rallied from a set down to beat Punjab’s Harnoor Kaur Sidhu. 

Aditi lost the first set 4-6, but won the next two sets 6-3 7-5 to stay in contention for a place in the final.

Naresh, Ajay in National Tennis Championship quarterfinals

Chandigarh: CLTA trainees Naresh Badgujar and Ajay Singh have reached the quarterfinals of the Fenesta Open National Tennis Championship in New Delhi. Playing at the DLTA Complex, Badgujar upset fifth seed Udit Gogoi 6-4 4-6 6-3 to ease into the boys’ U-16 quarterfinal, while Ajay beat practice partner Sukhpreet Singh Jhoje 6-3 7-6(2) in the boys’ U-14 pre-quarterfinals.
