Chandigarh, October 21

A parade was organised in the memory of martyrs to mark Police Commemoration Day at Sector 17 here today.

On October 21, police officials remember their colleagues who laid down their lives in the line of duty. On the occasion, a two-minute silence is observed to pay homage to the martyrs.

UT DGP Sanjay Baniwal, along with other police officers, paid tributes to the departed colleagues at the Martyrs’ Memorial.

From September 1 last year till August this year, a total of 414 police officers and personnel from paramilitary police forces and police organisations sacrificed their lives while discharging their duty.

On October 21, 1959, a team of the Indian Police, deployed to defend the national frontiers in the Ladakh region, was attacked by Chinese troops hidden in the hills. Ten CRPF jawans were killed in the attack. Since then, the day is observed as Martyrdom Day at central police organisations and police forces in remembrance of the sacrifice of their companions.

The Chandigarh Police, since its inception in 1966, have been striving hard to provide an efficient, law abiding and responsive law enforcement machinery. Six policemen, namely Inspector Jagjit Singh, Inspector Sucha Singh, SI Amarjit Singh, ASIAmarjit Singh, ASI Lalu Ram and ASI Amin Chand died while discharging their duties.

Last year, the UT police had organised ceremonies at the native villages of the six martyrs. This year too, functions were held at the alma mater of the martyrs in their hometowns.

DSPs of the UT police paid tributes to the six martyrs in the presence of their family members, staff and students of their respective schools/colleges. Meanwhile, the UT police have announced an annual scholarship of Rs 11,000 in the name of the martyrs. The scholarship will be provided to toppers of Class X at these schools. — TNS
