Two women lose gold jewellery to tricksters

CHANDIGARH: Two women were duped of their gold jewellery by two fraudsters.

Two women were duped of their gold jewellery by two fraudsters. The suspects made way with their jewellery after befooling the women.

According to the police, the first incident was reported from Sector 18 where a 60-year-old woman was duped of her two gold bangles and two gold rings.

The victim, Onkar Dai, a resident of Sector 19, had gone to Sector 18 for some work when two youths approached her near the Irrigation Department. The youths told the victim that snatching incidents are on the rise in the city. The duo suggested the victim to remove her jewellery and keep it safely in her bag.

“The suspects took the jewellery from the woman and wrapped it in a paper. The youths then returned it to the victim and fled from the spot on a motorcycle,” said a police official. The victim later checked the paper and found that it contained two duplicate bangles.

The police were informed about the incident. A case of cheating was registered at the Sector 19 police station.

A similar incident was reported from near Mauli Jagran where a woman, Kamlaish Gupta, a resident of Baltana, Zirakpur, fell prey to fraudsters.

The victim, who works as an insurance agent, reported that two persons approached her when she was going towards her office in NAC, Mani Majra. They claimed that since she was wearing gold ornaments, someone could snatch her jewellery. The suspects asked the woman to remove her gold bangle and a ring and put them in the bag.

The police said when the victim was keeping the jewellery in her bag, the suspects offered her to wrap it in a paper. The suspects then wrapped the jewellery in a paper and returned it to the victim.

When the woman checked her bag after reaching the office, she found that the suspects had befooled her. They had exchanged her jewellery with a duplicate bangle. The victim approached the police following which a case was registered at the Mauli Jagran police station.

Woman’s purse snatched

Chandigarh: A pedestrian escaped after snatching a purse from a woman in Sector 22 here on Tuesday morning. Sources said the miscreant, aged around 18 years, snatched the purse containing Rs 2,000, a mobile phone and some documents from the woman near the Civil Dispensary, Sector 22, here. The police have initiated an investigation into the matter. — TNS
