Chandigarh, December 4

The University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), Panjab University (PU), bagged a research project worth Rs 2.24 crore from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, under the title ‘Development of 5G-based UAV Augmented Intelligent Monitoring and Surveillance System’.

Recently, the Government of India has released guidelines for drone usages. The data collected using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) will work in augmentation with sensors’ data to offer accurate and reliable monitoring and security.

“Faculty members at Telecommunication Laboratory, UIET, worked on this recent development. The proposed work will implement a layered framework for seamless device-to-device (D2D) communication and control, while collaborating modern technologies over 5G communication,” said the PU spokesperson.

“Different layers will support varied functionality and will offer choice of services to the end users. The integration of data storage on Cloud with machine learning models will enable real-time availability of data and help to run independent data analytics and applications offering flexible services to all stakeholders,” added the spokesperson.

The proposed framework can be used for deploying applications such as mob behaviour analysis, traffic analysis, detection of intruders, verification of land records, illegal sand mining, monitoring and detection of breeding areas for various diseases

The project will also help in building facilities for state-of-the-art research facilities for the faculty, postgraduate students and research scholars to work on their projects in this area and to enhance collaboration with the industry.

Some of the objectives of project are setting up of unified 5G platform for M2M communication and understanding UAV policy framework, developing framework for capturing data using policy compliant UAVs, its storage and management, developing machine learning models for surveillance analytics and intelligent event detection, performance analysis and verification of the proposed system.

The project has Coral Telecom Limited as the industry partner — contributing 10 per cent of the project cost. The project is in continuation with their earlier project titled ‘Development of Unified IP based Communication Platform for Voice, Video, Data, Messaging and Chat Services’, which led to the development of a product — ‘Nah-Sanchar’.

In the current project, the team will work on developing indigenous IMS that will work on the top of 4G/5G network to provide connectivity and communication support to UAVs (drones) to carry out monitoring and surveillance operations.

The system is intended to be coupled with machine learning models for the detection of events and generating alerts.
