The Equal Opportunity Cell for Persons with Disabilities (EOC-PwDs), PU, celebrated World Disability Day at the university here today.
The event was coordinated by Dr Ramesh Kataria, with the help of EOC-PwDs organising team, including Prof Rajesh Jaiswal, Dr Aman Khera, Prof Vinod Kumar, Prof Harmail, and students (Pardeep Kumari, Shubham, Dheeru, Ravinder, Dr Dheeraj, Jatinder, Rimpi).
The celebration started from the Guru Tegbahadur Building at 11 am. An awareness rally was flagged off for students and faculty. Students showed various slogans pertaining to disability through banners and posters. The rally ended at the Student Centre where next phase of the event was scheduled. In the presence of Vice-Chancellor Prof Raj Kumar, the EOC-PwDs kicked off the programme.
Prof Vinod Kumar talked about the current situation of persons with disability in India. He emphasised the fact that United Nations considered “Persons with Disabilities” as a part of its “diversity”.
The VC talked about the work that should be done for uplifting PwDs and extended his support towards making the university a disabled-friendly place. He urged the EOC to come forward with small projects which university could complete in time.
Shubham Sharma, a research scholar at the Department of Public Administration, introduced the Vice-Chancellor to various aids and appliances used by persons with blindness. The Vice-Chancellor asked the EOC to adopting a park and make it accessible to PwDs.
