The city has bagged the first position in the Ease of Living Index — 2018 under the population-based cities category and has been ranked fifth overall among 111 Indian cities.

The Ministry for Housing and Urban Affairs released the rankings of 111 cities in the Ease of Living Index on Monday. Among the union territories, Chandigarh is the only city that has made it to the top 10 list.

Sharing this information here on Monday, KK Yadav, MC Commissioner, said Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, presented India’s first-ever Ease of Living Index to assess the ease of living standards in 111 Indian cities, including those identified under the Smart City Mission, capital cities and a few cities having a population of over one million.

He said the index covered 111 cities inhabited by nearly 134 million people. The ministry had developed a set of “liveability standards in cities” to generate a liveability Index and rate cities in June 2017. The liveability standards are different features grouped into 15 thematic categories, which are part of the four pillars of comprehensive development of cities namely institutional, social, economic and physical.

The Commissioner said the classification of cities had been done on the basis of population and Chandigarh fell in the range of 0.5 million to 1 million.

The ministry released the ease of living report evaluating 111 cities on a 100-point scale under four primary pillars. Chandigarh stood first scoring 53.16 marks, while Tiruchirappalli was second with 48.82 marks in the population-based category of cites (0.5 million to 1 million range). However, Chandigarh ranked fifth overall. The first four ranked cities are Pune (58.11 marks), Navi Mumbai (58.02 marks), Greater Mumbai (57.78 marks) and Tirupati (57.72 marks).

City aces economic factors category

Chandigarh also performed well in the economic factors category and was ranked first followed by Ajmer, Kota and Indore. In the social infrastructure category, Tirupati topped the rankings followed by Tiruchirappalli, Navi Mumbai and Chandigarh.

A great moment, says Kirron

“It is a great moment for the city to have performed well in the Ease of Living Index — 2018.  This has been made possible by the contribution of residents and officials. Everybody deserves to be complimented for the achievement.” — Kirron Kher, MP
