HOSHIARPUR: Taking action against illegal liquor trade, the administration seized around 249 bottles of liquor stored illegally at a workshop late last night.

Taking action against illegal liquor trade, the administration seized around 249 bottles of liquor stored illegally at a workshop late last night.

District Election Officer Isha Kalia said at midnight on Friday, a flying squad and a static surveillance team, along with the police party, on the basis of a tip-off, checked a workshop on Dholwaha Road in Hariana. It was found that the liquor was illegally stored. Three youths, who were present on the spot, tried to flee after seeing the police, but were nabbed.

She said a case had been registered against Kulvir Singh, Charanjit Singh and Sandeep Kumar under Sections 61-1-14, Punjab Excise Act, 1914.

Stern action against drug trade was being taken by the Narcotics Cell and Special Task Force while special teams were constituted by the Excise and Taxation Department for checking of liquor movement in seven Assembly constituencies of the district. These teams were conducting 24x7 checking. Besides, monitoring of liquor contractors’ vends was also being done to check the illicit use of alcohol during the elections, she said.

Assistant Returning Officer Sham Chaurasi-cum-District Development and Panchayat Officer Sarbjit Singh Bains said liquor of various brands had been recovered from the workshop. It was illegally stored without license and permit.

Liquor, intoxicants seized; 3 held

Phillaur: The police seized 40 boxes of liquor, 100 intoxicating injections and 80 empty boxes of liquor from a house here on Friday. The house owner and his two wives were arrested. The suspects have been identified as Raman Kumar, Sarabjit Kaur and Paramjit Kaur of Chokrran village. Phillaur DSP Davinder Singh Attri told mediapersons that the recovered goods were kept in a bathroom. A case under the NDPS Act and the Excise Act has been registered.
