City sees 62.92 per cent turnout

Jalandhar recorded a polling percentage of 62.92 per cent during the Lok Sabha elections today, whereas it was 67.21 per cent during the previous LS poll held in 2014.

Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma, Commissioner of Police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar and Senior Superintendent of Police Navjot Singh Mahal kept a strict vigil over the entire situation during the polling hours by visiting key and vulnerable polling booths.

The officers visited model and all-women polling booths in the Ladowali Road, Model Town and Jandu Singha areas where they held detailed deliberations with polling staff and voters.

Meanwhile, they thanked wise voters of the district for again upholding the glorious tradition of exercising their franchise freely by casting their votes without any fear.

They said peaceful turnout by voters for exercising their franchise reflects the love that Punjabis have for their democratic rights.

They said polling was completely peaceful and there was no report of any untoward incident from any polling booth in the parliamentary constituency. No major incident of violence was reported during the voting process that started at 7 am and completed at 6 pm.

They said the district administration had made elaborate security arrangements for today’s polling as around 23,000 employees from the civil and Police Department had been assigned various duties.

They said 2,329 polling parties were deployed at 1,863 polling booths of the district.

The Deputy Commissioner said the counting of votes would take place on May 23 at 8 am during which around 500 staff members would be deputed at the counting centre for counting the votes.
