District administration gears up for Global Kabaddi League

JALANDHAR: The Sports Minister Punjab Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi will inaugurate the ‘Global Kabaddi League’, being organised by the Punjab government on October 14.

The Sports Minister Punjab Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi will inaugurate the ‘Global Kabaddi League’, being organised by the Punjab government on October 14.

Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma said to promote sports in the state, the league was being held by the Sports Department in collaboration with the private sponsors. The entire expenses would be borne by them, whereas the administrative help and the stadiums would be provided by the State Government.

Sharma said the league would be organised from October 14 to November 3, adding that its inauguration would be held at the Surjit Hockey stadium at Burlton Park by Cabinet Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi. Punjabi singer Gurdas Mann would regale the audience with his songs. He said the league would be held at Jalandhar from October 14 to 21 and the closing as well as the finals would be held at the hockey stadium, Mohali.

The DC said six teams namely California Eaglea (USA), Maple Leaf (Canada), Singh Warriors (Punjab), Black Panthers (Fresno, USA), Haryana Lions (India) and Doaba Warriors (USA) would participate in the league and vie with each for an award of Rs 1 crore, adding that first runners up would get Rs 75 lakh, whereas the second runners up would get a prize of Rs 50 lakh.
