Garbage dump troubles students

The garbage dump site selected by the Bilga Nagar Panchayat (NP) in front of Government Primary School (Girls) is posing health hazards to students. The garbage is segregated regularly and dry garbage is burnt.

“The situation has worsened and the foul smell emanates from rotting garbage. The smoke from the burning garbage enters the school causing breathing problems.” said students.

The school authorities have taken up the issue with officials concerned.

The principal of the school, in an official communication, to the executive officer of nagar panchayat said: “Your office has established garbage dump in front of the school and plastic waste is burnt and it’s poisonous smoke enter the school, making it difficult to breath.”

Worried parents have brought the issue to her notice and asked to get the garbage dump site immediately, added the principal.

The residents of Bilga have urged the district administration to initiate action against the Bilga nagar panchayat for dumping garbage near the school. Social activist and journalist Rajindar Singh in a representation to Jalandhar DC Varinder Kumar Sharma said the garbage dumping site in front of the school was a violation of human rights.
