In a special drive against heavy vehicles, the traffic wing of the city police today prohibited these vehicles from entering no-entry zones. A number of truck drivers who had come for loading and unloading of goods were kept immovable near Maqsudan Sabzi Mandi. Only the vehicles who were having authority letters from Food Corporation of India the (FCI) were allowed to move.
Taking cognizance of the three accidental deaths that occurred within three months due to heavily-loaded trucks, the ADCP, Traffic, issued the orders that the trucks transporting goods between 8 am to 8 pm will not only be challaned, but strict action will also be taken against them.
Reportedly, a 30-year-old vegetable wholesaler and a 52-year-old woman were crushed to death by speeding trucks near Maqsudan Sabzi Mandi and DAV College in August and September respectively. The trucks were apparently moving on the no-entry route. “Subsequently after the death of an elderly lady recently, the traffic police have tightened the noose around heavy vehicles moving in banned roads,“ said ASI Baljit Singh., who was deployed to halt these vehicles.”
Trucks coming from different cities and states usually commute to their desired locations through the Maqsudan-DAV stretch only. Hindering the regular traffic, around a dozen trucks were made to stand across the roads.
A truck driver from Ganganagar, said, this was the first time, they were not allowed to move, therefore the cops should informed us before issuing such order.
Another truck driver from Kashmir said, a few days ago they had to pay Rs 100 to Rs 200 to the traffic police for seeking permission to unload their goods at sabji mandi and dana mandi.
The ADCP Traffic Kulwant Singh Heer, said, due to the inconvenience faced by residents, from now onwards heavy commercial vehicles would be prohibited to move for 12 hours during the day time.
Notably, till now 180 challans were issued to heavy vehicles moving in the no-entry zones, 99 challans were issued in September and 30 challans were issued in June.
