Scholarships galore at government girls school

JALANDHAR: Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Adarsh Nagar, here, has excelled in the field of National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) and the Punjab State Talent Search Examination (PSTSE), which aim to provide financial support in the form of scholarship to students.

Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Adarsh Nagar, here, has excelled in the field of National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) and the Punjab State Talent Search Examination (PSTSE), which aim to provide financial support in the form of scholarship to students.

The girl students of the school have bagged the first position in the district as well in the state by qualifying the NMMS and PSTSE exams conducted by the State Council of Education Research and Training, Punjab (SCERT).

Around 47 students of the school have qualified for the PSTSE exam, in which the first three positions in the state are secured by students of the school. While 42 students qualified the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) exam and the first five positions in the state are from this school. The NMMS exam was held in November last year and the PSTSE was held in February this year.

The NMMS is a centralised scheme, which provides students with scholarship worth Rs 12,000 per annum in the state. The students get this scholarship from Class IX till XII.

The PSTSE is the state’s own exam that aims to provide scholarship to 500 students studying at Class VIII and the similar number of students studying in Class X. Students who clear it, get Rs 2,400 per year till Class XII.

Among those who cleared the NMMS exam and secured top five spots in the state are Simranjit Kaur, Shilpa Verma, Shama Parveen, Silky and Simran. While, the top three position holder in PSTSE in district as well state are Swaliha, Simranjit Kaur and Shilpa.

Principal of the school Khushdeep Kaur said: “For the past many years, our school has been maintaining the record of the number of students qualifying the exam. While there is a misconception that government school students can’t make it big. Our students have continuously proved this wrong.”

“Last year, around 25 students cleared NMMS and PSTSE. However breaking every record this year the students have set a benchmark,” she added.
