Sikh activists meet MLAs over Bargari firing incident

JALANDHAR: Activists of various Sikh organisations, including Sikhs for Equality, on Sunday met various MLAs of the city to raise the issue of inaction against those responsible for the Bargari and Behbal Kalan firing incidents.

Activists of various Sikh organisations, including Sikhs for Equality, on Sunday met various MLAs of the city to raise the issue of inaction against those responsible for the Bargari and Behbal Kalan firing incidents.

Activists of the Sikhs for Equality, Punjab, and Sikh Talmel Committee Bhat Youth Welfare and other Sikh groups met Jalandhar Central MLA Rajinder Beri, Jalandhar West MLA Sushil Rinku, Kartarpur MLA Chaudhary Surinder Singh to raise their demands at the Chief Minister level. All MLAs assured the activists that the issues would be taken up with the Chief Minister.

The groups demanded that a special Vidhan Sabha session be called to discuss the issue and implement key recommendations of the Justice Ranjit Singh Commission Report.

The groups have also demanded the inclusion of the name of key police officials in the case-related FIRs and probing of the Dera Sirsa link in the Bargari killings.

The demand letters submitted by them on the issue to various MLAs also include implementation of the findings of the Justice Ranjit Singh Commission Report, proper action against the accused in the Behbal Kalan and Bargari firing incidents and direct probing of the role of the then DGP Sumedh Saini in the incidents.

Activists also demanded that the government should also table the report of the Gurnam Singh Commission which probed the firing against four youths on February 4, 1986, in Nakodar, who were protesting against the desecration of Guru Granth Sahib.

Sukhdev Singh Phagwara, Tejinder Singh Pardesi, Harpal Singh Chaddha, Harpreet Singh Neetu, Iqbal Singh Bunty and Sarabjit Singh Batra were among those present.
