On the occasion of the Independence Day, many unions marked the day as ‘Ghulami Diwas’ and  ‘Azadi diwas te ghulmai dian mubarkan’ read the status of Ashish Julaha, Punjab general secretary of Theka Mulazam committee.

The general secretary said the condition of youth and farmers of Punjab was worsening everyday and there was nothing to celebrate Independence Day.

“Everyone is a slave of others, be it a government employee or private employee, youths or farmers of Punjab. We have got the independence but have become slaves to our own political parties,” he said.

On August 14, the committee along with Class IV government employee union had held the protest to make them regular.

The members said there was nothing for them to celebrate the independence as the government had robbed them of their rights.

Recently, to protest against the state government, the contractual workers had held a ‘Shok Sabha’ (condolence meet) of the manifesto of the Congress that was released before coming to power. The members said the promises made by the government had not been fulfilled.

The members have been demanding implementation of regularisation policy for long. The members said thousands of employees in Punjab had been working on contractual basis and were getting low salaries.

The members said most of the employees are getting the wages ranging from Rs 4,000 to Rs 15,000 which was not acceptable. “Is it even possible to run families with such a meagre income.
