The rural police on Saturday arrested four narcotic smugglers, including a woman, and recovered 5 kg of opium and 570 g of heroin from their possession. The accused have been identified as Amit Kumar, alias Kaka, Shufa Haruna, Kuldip Singh, alias Baba (47), and Ram Bahadur (55), a farmer.

In two separate cases, Amit and Shufa were arrested with 570 g of heroin and the others were arrested with opium.

SSP Navjot Singh Mahal said in the first incident, SI Ramandeep Singh, along with the police, nabbed two narcotic smugglers and recovered 570 gm of heroin from them. The police had laid a naka in the Bidhipur area and on suspicion, apprehended Amit Kumar, alias Kaka (22) and recovered 20 g of heroin from him.

“The accused said he had brought the heroin from Shufa, a resident of New Delhi,” the SSP said and added that the police arrested Shufa from Murthal, Haryana, and recovered 550 g of heroin from her.

“Amit had come in contact with Shufa through Sohan Lal, alias Kala, who is at present undergoing 18 years’ sentence in a Kapurthala jail and used to sell heroin in Jalandhar by reaping huge margins,” the police said.

“While Shufa is residing in Delhi since the past one year and is in the business of selling heroin, her family resides in Tanzania,” the police said.

In another case of opium recovery, Harinder Singh, in-charge, CIA-I, along with a police party nabbed Kuldip Singh and Ram Bahadur and recovered 5 kg of opium from them.

The police had laid the naka in Sadar Nakodar and arrested both accused and recovered the opium and a Maruti Swift car from the accused.

“Ram is a farmer by profession and used to do farming in Pilibhit. He revealed that he had bought this consignment of opium from a resident of Jharkhand and was about to sell the same in various areas with the help of Kuldip,” the police said. — TNS
