Rain played spoilsport as the opening one-day match between Ludhiana and Patiala in the Punjab State Inter-District Cricket (Senior) Tournament for the FC Mittal Trophy played on Saturday at the Jathedar Santokh Singh Margind Sewa Committee, Cricket Stadium, Dulay village, near here, remained unresolved.

Teams secured two points each. The visitors won the toss and opted to bat first. They began on a sedate note, losing three quick wickets with just 23 runs on the board.

Then, they witnessed a useful partnership of 55 runs for the fourth wicket between Anmolpreet Singh and Mandeep Bawa. After the departure of Bawa on his individual score of 27, Anmolpreet figured in another valuable partnership of 121 runs for the fifth wicket with Anmol Malhotra with the latter contributing 40 runs.

This provided formidability (199 for 5 after 44.2 overs) to Patiala innings, which eventually posed a challenging total of 252 runs for the loss of seven wickets in the stipulated 50 overs with the pivotal role of Anmolpreet Singh, who scored 117 runs that included 5 sixes and 9 hits over the ropes.

Chasing the target, hosts Ludhiana were 30 for one after 13.3 overs, when it started raining. As it continued to pour, there was no other option but to abandon the match.
