Students from schools showcased their scientific skills and abilities at a science fair organised under “Padho Punjab, Padhao Punjab” project at the Government Senior Secondary School, Cemetery Road on Tuesday.

Students from Class VI to X prepared science models on various topics, including acid, base and salt, solar water and cooker, vegetative propagation, electrolysis of water, refraction of light and stethoscope.

Simranjit Kaur of Class X prepared a model of solar water. She replaced the water pipe with a black steel pipe and closed the rear end of the pipe with a clip to retain water. As the apparatus is placed under sun, the temperature of water goes up and is heated naturally.

A ‘vegetative propagation’ model designed by Class X student explained asexual reproduction in plants. Another student showed experiment with China rose water, turmeric, soap and turmeric strip to show presence of starch.

“It took one week to help students learn scientific principles through practical approach. It is certain that when students learn practically, they retain the concepts thoroughly,” said a science teacher.

While the science fair aims at inculcating scientific temperament among students, however, it could be witnessed that students were hesitant to give an overview of their models. The nervousness could possibly be attributed to minimal interaction among students at government schools, claimed teachers.

Science activity fair will be organised at 532 schools in Ludhiana district. A total of 116 activities from Class VI to X will be covered under the event. Each school has been given a plan according to which they will organise the fair. The event will continue till August 21 in all districts.
