Ludhiana, May 22

The court of Additional Sessions Judge Jagdeep Singh Marok has convicted three persons on the charge of smuggling heroin.

They were ordered to undergo rigorous imprisonment of 10 years each. A fine of Rs 1 lakh each was also imposed upon them.

The convicted are Baljit Singh, Balvir Singh and Sukhwinder Singh of Lattiwal village, Sultanpur Lodhi, Kapurthala district.

“Society was facing a great threat from drug smugglers. They were playing with the future of the young generation just for the sake of earning money in an easy way. Drug smugglers need no leniency. It was the need of the hour to deal with such persons strictly,” remarked the court while declining the plea of leniency raised by the accused.

A case against them was registered at the Doraha police station on November 29, 2017, under the NDPS Act.

According to prosecution, inspector Manjit Singh, along with a police party, had set up a naka.

The accused came in a Safari from the Khanna side towards Ludhiana. On seeing the police party, the accused stopped their vehicle.

Following suspicion, the police apprehended them. Thereafter, on personal search, 350 gram heroin was recovered from each accused in the presence of DSP Rashpal Singh.

However, the accused pleaded innocence. After examining the evidence on record, the court found them guilty.
