City athletes clinch gyold medals at South Asian Games in Nepal

Three athletes of the city have brought laurels by winning gold medals in the South Asian Games in Kathmandu (Nepal). The games, which began on December 1, concluded on Tuesday. While Tajinderpal Singh Toor won a gold medal in shotput, Suresh Kumar in a 10,000m race and Kirpal Singh in discus throw.

Tajinderpal Singh Toor won a gold medal with a throw of 20.03m in shotput and bettered the previous record of 19.15m made in 1999 by S Bahadur Singh. Toor was also India’s flag-bearer at the South Asian Games this year. Earlier, Toor won a gold medal and set a new record with a throw of 20.75m in the Asian Games held in 2018.

It is pertinent to mention here that the athletes have already represented the country in the Asian, Commonwealth and World University Games. The other two athletes, Suresh Kumar and Kirpal Singh, also clinched gold medals in race and discus throw, respectively. While Suresh Kumar bagged the gold in a 10,000m race with a timing of 29 minutes 33 seconds, Kirpal Singh got the top honours with a throw of 57.88m in discus throw. These athletes also represented the country in the Commonwealth Games and the World University Games.

Notably, all these three athletes are former students of Malwa College in Bathinda. After the news regarding these athletes winning gold medals spread, the college management and faculty members, including sports teachers, expressed their happiness and congratulated the winning players.

KPS Brar, general secretary, Punjab Athletics Association, extended their heartiest congratulations to the athletes who brought laurels to the country and also congratulated the management, staff and students of the college for their marvellous achievements.

Raman Kumar Singla, chairman, Malwa College, Rakesh Goyal, executive member, BK Garg, principal, Darshan Singh, director, Malwa College of Physical Education, and RC Sharma, dean, congratulated the winning athletes and announced that they would be honoured at a special function to be held in the college.
