Gurugram, March 8

A state-level function to mark International Women’s Day was held in Gurugram today, with Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar lauding and thanking women for their commendable role in development.

Addressing a gathering, he said mother was the biggest celebration of womanhood and everybody was indebted to them. He announced the launch of a ‘mothers for sports and fitness app’, through which mothers would come to know about sports facilities and coaches available in their proximity so that they could motivate children to avail themselves of the facilities to become mentally and physically fit.

Khattar released a booklet on ‘poshan pakhwara’ (nutrition fortnight), statewide campaign launched today which would last till March 22. Under the campaign, health of adolescent girls, pregnant women and children would be examined.

They would be made aware of nutritious food. Health check-up camps would be organised and baseline surveys conducted to identify areas having more women suffering from anaemia. He administered ‘nutrition oath’ to all participants.

A total of 29 women achievers from across the state were honoured. Three districts — Panchkula, Sirsa and Panipat — were awarded for better nutrition. Four districts — Ambala, Panchkula, Jhajjar and Panipat — were awarded for improvement in sex ratio.

Khattar said 3.9 lakh streetlights would be put up in the state. He said 2 lakh CCTV cameras had been installed and 1 lakh more would be installed in the next two years.

He said special vehicles were being provided to girl students. He said 31 new girls’ colleges had been opened and nine more would be set up so that girl students did not have to travel more than 20 km.

He said Haryana was the first state to announce capital punishment for rape of girls below 12 years of age. He said numerous steps had been taken to provide more secure atmosphere.

Karnal: Fourteen women were honoured at a district-level function here on Sunday. Minister of State for Archaeology and Museums Anoop Dhanak gave away certificates for excelling in various fields, including education, sports, police, women and child welfare and panchayati raj.

Ambala: Assembly Speaker Gian Chand Gupta said women should be respected every single day instead of showing respect one day in a year. He was addressing a gathering on International Women’s Day celebrations. Virali Modi, a disability rights activist and motivational speaker, was among those honoured.
