THERE is no legal concept of "digital arrest", yet scammers have exploited fear so effectively that victims willingly transfer their life savings to escape a non-existent threat. The elderly are more vulnerable to this scam, but educated youth have also fallen prey to it. The problem has worsened in recent years. Fake and forged court orders as well as fake court proceedings have only emboldened this kind of scam. A few months ago, an elderly couple from Delhi was duped of Rs 14.8 crore, involving a fake police officer and a fake Supreme Court hearing.

THE TRIBUNE, India’s oldest, daily English-language newspaper, was first published on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan), and save for 40 days in the immediate aftermath of Partition, has come out every day over the last 145 years. THE TRIBUNE is free, objective, and independent. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language, are the hallmarks of the paper.

The Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
