WhatsApp usernames need a fair chance

The username is only a display layer, not a replacement for identity

WHEN Meta announced on June 29 that WhatsApp users would soon be able to be found and messaged by a chosen handle instead of a phone number, the Central government's response was swift and wary. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) served WhatsApp a notice, sought a detailed explanation within three days, and directed the company not to launch the feature in India until consultations with MeitY, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and rival messaging platforms were complete. The ministry's fear, spelled out in the notice, is that usernames could "materially increase" online fraud, phishing, digital arrest scams and impersonation.
