Jalandhar, February 19

Protesting against the “faulty design” of the PAP flyover, residents of Guru Nanakpura, led by MLA Rajinder Beri, today blocked the Jalandhar-Amritsar national highway for an hour.

Accompanied by Congress activists, they raised slogans against the Central Government and Cabinet minister Nitin Gadkari, demanding that the service lane below the flyover be opened and smooth passage be provided till Amritsar.

At present, the residents have to take a 1-km detour across the busy Rama Mandi underpass to take the highway to Amritsar.

The protesters were carrying placards reading “PAP flyover da galat design taiyaar karan vale adhikariyan khilaaf karvai kiti jave”.

Officials of the National Highways Authority of India and the district administration had to intervene. They assured the protesters that the matter would be resolved within 20 days.

The dharna was lifted after ADC (G) Jasbir Singh reached the spot and pacified the protesters. The access to Amritsar, from PAP, has been blocked since October last year.

The highway has been a subject of heated debate and contention among city activists and residents. Various RTIs and complaints have been filed, calling the structure faulty.
