Ludhiana, March 18
Residents of Jaspal Colony in Giaspura have complained about contaminated water supply and overflowing sewers in the area. Residents claimed that they were forced to drink stinking water for the past few days.
Residents demanded that the Municipal Corporation (MC) authorities should take immediate required measures and ensure provision of safe drinking water for them.
They also demanded that the Health Department should collect water samples from the area as diarrhoea outbreak had already taken place in the Giaspura area a few years ago.
Sonu Prasad Gupta, a resident of Jaspal Colony, said, “Potable water supplied in the colony is contaminated. It seems sewer water is getting mixed with potable water in supply pipes.”
“After residents complained, the authorities cleared choked sewer today. It seems no one is bothered to find out the actual fault behind water contamination,” he added.
Another resident said, “We have been getting stinking water supply for the past 10 days. Contamination in the water is clearly visible. We also request officials concerned to take required measures to provide relief to colony residents. Chances of the outbreak of water-borne diseases are high here. The civic body must pay attention to ensure cleanliness and de-silting of sewers.”
Junior Engineer, Avneet Singh said, “We have received a complaint about overflowing sewer. We have deployed the staff to resolve the problem today.”
“If Jaspal Colony residents still have a complaint about water contamination, the staff concerned will be deployed to check water supply pipes in the area on Thursday morning,” he added.
