Chandigarh, February 20
In view of rising cases of Covid-19 in several parts of the country, including Punjab, the UT Health Department has urged healthcare workers and frontline workers to take the vaccine jab before another wave of Covid hits the city.
Today was the last day for free vaccination for the healthcare workers. Experts have urged the targeted group to take vaccination during the mop-up round and develop immunity against the disease.
Dr Amandeep Kaur Kang, Director, Health Services, Chandigarh, said: “The immunity against Covid-19 is developed in approximately two months, including both dose schedules. Given that Covid cases have started rising in the nearby states, there are high chances that its impact will be felt in the Chandigarh region too. Punjab has already started showing a rise in cases and it is worrisome. The peak will gradually take at least two months to pace up and we must ensure that our frontline workers and healthcare workers are immune by that time. Skipping the vaccination is not the right approach as trend can change anytime.”Dr Kang shared that the cases in Chandigarh are at present showing a mixed trend with a few days showing a little spike.
Dr Jasvinder Kaur, Director, Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, said the vaccination programme had picked up pace at the Government Medical College and Hospital. As many as 206 beneficiaries were vaccinated on Saturday. She said since it was the last day, many beneficiaries turned up for vaccination. It was expected that more healthcare workers would come forward in the mop-up round.
