The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), a major establishment under the Ministry of Defence, collaborates closely with the MHA to develop and supply technologies for internal security, border management, counter-terrorism, disaster response and low-intensity conflict (LIC) operations. Besides the Armed Forces and CAPFs, some of the equipment developed by DRDO is also used by the state police forces and other law enforcement agencies.

Major DRDO technologies for MHA include non-lethal ammunition like rubber bullets, surveillance gadgets, personal wear and protective gear, bullet-proof jackets, demolition devices, explosive detection and counter-IED tools and riot control equipment.

Some weapons developed by the DRDO including assault rifles, corner-shot weapon systems to fire around corners without exposing individuals, drones, counter-terrorism and urban assault equipment have also been inducted by police and paramilitary forces.

Disaster management technologies such as search and rescue tools, shelters, ration packs, survival equipment, shelters and avalanche warning and mitigation have also been provided by DRDO.

The products are designed and developed by DRDO with inputs on technical specifications from the user force where required and once approved for induction after trials, the products are manufactured by the industry through transfer of technology.

The MHA has established a comprehensive mechanism for induction of DRDO developed products in CAPFs and laid down the procedure in detail for the placement of orders by user forces with the development-cum-production-partner.
