11% Delhiites suffer from mental illness, 12% visually impaired: Report
Highlights initiatives taken by govt for Persons with Disabilities
In the national capital, 11.23 per cent people suffer from mental illness, 12.83 per cent are visually impaired, while 21.11 per cent suffer from
hearing and speech loss, according to the Delhi statics report 2025.
Of the total 11.23 per cent people suffering from mental illness, 6.96 per cent suffer mental retardation, a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by significant limitations in both intellectual functioning (such as reasoning, problem-solving and learning) and adaptive behaviour (skills needed for daily living like communication, self-care and social interaction) and 4.28 per cent suffer from mental illness, the report highlighted.
It further mentioned that out of total 21.11 per cent people suffering from hearing and speech loss, 14.69 per cent can’t hear, while 6.43 per cent cannot speak.
The report also mentioned that out of the total disabled population, 28.69 suffer from locomotor disability which refers to a condition that restricts a person’s ability to move, control or coordinate their limbs or body due to impairments in the bones, joints, muscles or nervous system. It affects movement from one place to another and the ability to perform daily physical tasks like walking, grasping objects, or lifting.
The report also highlighted the initiatives taken by the government for Persons with Disabilities (PWD).
The Capital has four training-cum-production centres, 1,006 schools for the deaf and dumb, 56 schools for mentally retard children, 82 homes for college-going blind students and 161 government-run schools for blind children, the report stated.
