Fourteen Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students, who were earlier granted bail in connection with a protest on the university campus by the Patiala House Court, were released on Sunday.

The students, including JNUSU president Aditi, vice-president Gopika, joint secretary Danish, former JNUSU president Nitish and AISA All-India president Neha, were detained after a march demanding the resignation of the JNU Vice-Chancellor over alleged casteist remarks, withdrawal of rustication of JNUSU office-bearers and implementation of UGC Equity Regulations and a proposed Rohith Act.

The arrests followed action by the Delhi Police and the Rapid Action Force against the protesting students.

Though students were granted bail on Friday, they were not released immediately due to what the court described as the “verification of their permanent addresses.”

The court noted that all 14 students hail from different states and reside in university hostels, and that the verification process would have resulted in an undue delay in their release.
