The accused have been identified as Prince Qazi and Abdullah, members of the Chenu gang, while the deceased has been identified as Misbah, a member of the Hashim Baba gang. Both gangs operate in the northeastern part of the national capital.
Misbah had several criminal cases, including murder, attempt to murder and robbery, registered against him.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) Ashish Mishra said they received a PCR call regarding a gunfire near Jama Masjid, Seelampur, around 10:40 pm on Thursday. A police team, along with senior officers, reached the spot and found a man lying in a pool of blood. He was rushed to Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Forensic teams examined the crime scene and collected evidence.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Misbah had been released from jail in July. On Thursday night, he went to K-Block, Seelampur, to have coffee when two motorcycle-borne men approached and shot him dead.
The police suspect the incident to be fallout of a gang rivalry between the Hashim Baba gang and Chhenu gang. Efforts are on to identify other accused involved in the attack.
Further inquiry revealed that Misbah earlier worked for the Chhenu gang and had carried out several major crimes with Shabbu, nephew of Mumtaz — a close relative of gangster Chhenu.
In 2023, Misbah and Shabbu were involved in the killing of two members of the Hashim Baba gang in the Welcome area. After their arrest and subsequent imprisonment, both later switched sides and joined the Hashim Baba gang.
