2,780 FIRs lodged, 7.5K complaints received by poll panel; Rs 220 crore seized in Delhi
The Election Commission received around 7,500 complaints for violating the model code of conduct (MCC) in Delhi. Besides, 2,780 FIRs were registered and seizures worth Rs 220 crore were made, officials said on Monday.
They said 7,499 complaints were received, of which 7,467 were resolved and only 32 cases remain under process.
An official said, “As many as 2,780 FIRs were registered under the Excise Act, Arms Act, and Defacement of Property Act. This surpasses the 2,067 FIRs recorded in the 2020 elections.”
“The largest component of the seizures includes Rs 88 crore in drugs, followed by Rs 81 crore in precious metals and Rs 39.87 crore in cash. This marks a nearly fourfold increase compared to the Rs 57.5 crore seizures in the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections,” it added.
Meanwhile, over 1.8 lakh election personnel have been deployed, including police, paramilitary, home guards and polling staff.
The Suvidha Platform, designed to facilitate permissions for election-related activities, has received 43,992 requests so far, another official said. “Of these, 34,823 requests have been approved while 8,900 were rejected as per the established guidelines. Additionally, 113 applications were cancelled due to duplication or invalidity.”
The commission have also been active on social media, addressing 115 complaints to dispel perceptions of bias.
While, the Delhi Police said more than 25,000 personnel would be deployed along with 104 companies of forces from other states and around 9,000 Home Guards.
A Delhi Police official said it seized 196 kg drugs worth Rs 78 crore and confiscated 1,008 litres of illegal liquor.
The police have been deployed at 43 major and over 100 small border posts for strict vigilance, and a static surveillance team is conducting routine check-ups in the run-up to the elections. Additionally, nearly 3,000 sensitive polling booths have been identified in Delhi.
The police have taken preventive measures against 33,434 people and pending non-bailable warrants have been cleared up to 85 per cent.
According to the police data, 1,08,258 litres of illegal liquor has been seized with the arrest of 1,353 persons under the Excise Act, 196 kg drugs valued at over 77 crore, along with the arrest of 177 offenders under the NDPS Act, from January 7 to February 2.
Special CP (Law and Order, Zone 2) Madhup Kumar Tiwari said, “The election campaigning ended on Monday evening, but we will continue to keep our presence in vulnerable areas to stop the distribution of liquor and cash and ensure that no one tries to threaten the electorates. For this, we will conduct flag march.”
The Delhi Police have also warned against recording social media reels at polling stations on the polling day. It will also monitor social media platforms to keep a check on any such activity, and a strict legal action against the offenders.
Additionally, the police sharing the data said Delhi witnessed a significant drop in crime rates in January 2025 compared to previous years.
Attempted murder cases fell to 50 from 71 in 2024 and 59 in 2023. Robberies declined to 103 from 146 in 2024, while snatching incidents dropped to 369 from 623. Cases of rape and POCSO violations stood at 101, down from 134.
