854 held in 48 hours under Op ‘gang bust’

As part of the crackdown against organised crime syndicates in the national capital, the Delhi Police arrested 854 offenders, including 280 members of various criminal gangs, as part of the 48-hour operation ‘gang bust’, officials said on Tuesday.

Nearly 9,000 cops from the different police districts, crime branch and special cell raided 4,000 identified hideouts as well as organised syndicates in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, Additional Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Pramod Singh Kushwah told the media.

About 6,500 targeted persons were rounded up, 690 FIRs registered and 854 persons arrested under various sections of the BNS, Arms Act, NDPS Act, Delhi Excise Act, Gambling Act and other provisions of law, he added.

Kushwah said, “The latent objective of the mammoth, muscular exercise was to deter any subversive, anti-national or terror element from approaching or taking succour in such networks for advancing their nefarious design, as maybe, to attempt disrupting the Republic Day celebrations.” Out of the 280 gang members, 14 are of infamous Kapil Sangwan alias Nandu syndicate, 13 Gogi gang, 9 of Kala Jathedi, 7 each of Tillu Tajpuria and Saddam Gauri-Salman Tyagi, 5 each of Neeraj Bawana and Hashim Baba 4, Manjeet Mahal-Ashok Pradhan and 207 members of minor gangs among others.

During the operation, the police recovered a huge quantity of illegal items. These included more than 300 weapons, 130 live cartridges, over Rs 25 lakh in cash, 117 mobile phones, more than 28,000 bottles and quarters of liquor, 118 kg of narcotics and other contraband.
