Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the Delhi Government has earmarked Rs 902 crore in the state budget for the development of unauthorised colonies in the 2024-2025 fiscal year. With approximately 1,731 unauthorised colonies identified across the Capital, the allocation aims to address key challenges faced by residents, including the lack of essential amenities such as clean water, sewage facilities and proper roads.

Rs 900 crore for village development

  • Rs 900 crore has been proposed for the development of villages in Delhi
  • The government aims to lay approximately 1,000 km of roads across more than 360 villages
  • A budget of Rs 500 crore has been allocated for the development of Delhi Metro

Highlighting the ongoing efforts towards uplifting these colonies, Finance Minister Atishi stated, “In addition to enhancing drainage and water infrastructure in unauthorised colonies, the government has completed the construction of 5,175 km of roads across 1,355 such settlements.” Furthermore, a budget of Rs 1,768 crore has been set aside for road and flyover projects in Delhi. Atishi revealed plans for several new flyovers and elevated corridors, including Barapullah Phase-III, a double-decker metro flyover on the Brijpuri junction via Karawal Nagar and a flyover from Nand Nagari to Gagan cinema junction, among others. These projects are slated for completion and inauguration in the upcoming fiscal year.

Moreover, Rs 900 crore has been proposed for the development of villages in Delhi in the same financial year. The government aims to lay approximately 1,000 km of roads across more than 360 villages, as disclosed by the Finance Minister. “The Delhi Government’s focus on improving internal roads connecting colonies is evident through the ‘Sadak Punarnirman Yojana’,” she said. With approximately 850 km of roads already constructed under this scheme, an additional budget of Rs 275 crore has been allocated to further enhance road infrastructure and address dark spots. Recognising the significance of the Delhi Metro as a primary mode of transportation, a budget of Rs 500 crore has been allocated for its development. Atishi highlighted plans to sign an MoU for the construction of three corridors under Phase-4 of the Delhi Metro, which includes the Janakpuri West to Ramakrishna Ashram Corridor, Delhi Aerocity to Tughlakabad Station Corridor and Miljis Park to Maujpur Corridor. These corridors, comprising 45 stations covering a total distance of 65.2 km, are set to significantly improve connectivity across the Capital.
