Two Delhi Police personnel from the outer district displayed exceptional courage while apprehending an armed robber in Shahbad Dairy despite sustaining stab injuries during a violent scuffle, the police said on Monday.
Head constable Kuldeep and constable Neeraj of the Shahbad Dairy police station were on routine patrol near Gupta Colony on Saturday evening when they received specific information about a notorious criminal, identified as Ravi, alias Panchi, who was allegedly armed and planning a robbery in the area, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outernorth) Hareshwar Swami said.
Considering the perceived threat to public safety, the two policemen immediately moved to intercept the suspect without waiting for reinforcements, the cop added.
On spotting the police team, the accused attempted to flee, leading to a brief chase and when he was intercepted, the miscreant violently resisted arrest and attacked the cops with a sharp-edged knife.
Head constable Kuldeep suffered two deep stab wounds — one near his left axilla (armpit) and another on his upper back — while constable Neeraj faced three knife attacks. Though two blows were deflected by his service belt, he sustained a puncture wound near the hip, the DCP mentioned.
Despite their injuries and heavy bleeding, both policemen engaged the accused in a physical struggle and managed to overpower him. During the scuffle, the accused was also found in possession of a loaded and cocked country-made pistol, which he was allegedly attempting to use. The timely action of the two policemen prevented a potentially fatal incident, the cop said.
The police seized one sharp-edged knife used in the attack and one country-made pistol (desi katta) from the accused. Both injured cops were rushed to MV Hospital and were later discharged.
