Asked to slow down, car driver fatally hits bike-borne constable, drags him on road
A motorcycle-borne Delhi Police constable posted at the Nangloi police station was hit by a car and dragged for 10 m on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, police officials said. The incident occurred around 2.15 am near Veena Enclave.
The constable, identified as Sandeep (30), was patrolling in his area in civil clothes.
“He was going towards Railway Road from the police station during duty hours,” said Jimmy Chiram, DCP, Outer District.
“The driver of a WagonR was driving recklessly, and when he was asked to stop, he suddenly accelerated, attempting to overtake. The vehicle sped up, struck him and dragged him for about 10 m before eventually colliding with another vehicle,” the DCP added.
Officials said Sandeep was immediately taken to Sonia Hospital and later shifted to Balaji Hospital in Paschim Vihar. However, he was declared dead. Sources revealed that the occupants of the vehicle were involved in the illegal liquor trade. The police seized the vehicle and a case under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered.
The police said there were two persons in the car who fled from the scene and a search operation was under way. However, the accused are yet to be identified.
Sandeep is survived by his mother, wife and a five-year-old son.
“The Delhi Police family pays obeisance to constable Sandeep of PS Nangloi, who lost his life in an unfortunate incident. We stand with the departed soul’s bereaved family in this difficult time,” the Delhi Police said in a post on X.
