BJP leader Praveen Shankar Kapoor has written a joint letter to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi VK Saxena and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, demanding an inquiry into a procession held on February 25 in Chandni Chowk.
In the letter, Kapoor alleged that over 200 individuals, described as Muslim land grabbers disguising themselves as pavement hawkers, organised the march, raising slogans, including “Jo Zameen Sarkari Hai, Woh Zameen Hamari Hai”. The participants reportedly demanded the formation of vendor committees under the banner of the AITUC.
Kapoor claimed that the procession and a public meeting were conducted under the protection of the Chandni Chowk police, which shocked local traders and residents. He urged the authorities to investigate the role of the police, alleging law enforcement had repeatedly shown “patronage to encroachments and rickshaw operations” in the area which, he said, had led to rising crime rate.
The letter also referenced recent Delhi High Court directives to remove heavy encroachments across Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid and Turkman Gate, adding that the procession appeared to be a reaction to the enforcement actions taken by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
Kapoor requested that the Delhi Government should seek a detailed report on the Chandni Chowk police inaction and take “appropriate legal action after identifying those involved” in the alleged anti-government demonstration.
