The Yamuna river here is set to undergo a major transformation with the launch of boat tourism and ferry services between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur.

In a significant move, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on Tuesday at Asita Park, marking the beginning of this ambitious project.

The agreement was signed between the Inland Waterways Authority of India, Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Delhi Jal Board, Irrigation and Flood Control Department, and Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation.

The project aims to boost inland water transport, tourism and ease traffic congestion in the city.

Once operational, the service will feature berthing jetties, solar and electric boats, ticket booths, charging points and cafeterias, along with public amenities and waiting areas. The initiative is expected to make the Yamuna a centre for eco-friendly water transport and leisure activities.

Speaking at the event, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta called it a milestone for the city. “During a recent Budget meeting, we discussed a campaign, ‘Meri Delhi, Hamari Delhi, Sundar Delhi, Viksit Delhi’, to globally promote our city and attract more visitors,” she said.

L-G VK Saxena highlighted the revival of the Yamuna. “After years of neglect, the lifeline of Delhi, the Yamuna, is now on the path to regaining its glory. Today’s MoU for cruise tourism and ferry services marks a new beginning,” he stated.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, along with Ministers Parvesh Verma and Kapil Mishra, were also present at the signing ceremony, underlining the government’s commitment to enhancing urban mobility and sustainable tourism.
