City sees three-fold spike in traffic violations on NY Eve

The Delhi Police intensified surveillance and enforcement to ensure road safety during the New Year celebrations. On New Year’s Eve, the police booked 8,461 violators, which is nearly three times higher than 2,901 violations recorded on December 31 last year, officials said on Thursday.

According to the police data, the number of drunken driving cases surged to 857 this year, compared to 272 cases on the New Year’s Eve last year. The city also witnessed an increase in other traffic violations such as wrong-side driving rising from 240 to 1,630 and improper parking cases soaring from 2,312 to 5,783.

Moreover, triple-riding violations also rose significantly from 77 to 191, reflecting intensified checking and stricter action on the streets, the data mentioned.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Shashank Jaiswal said on the New Year’s Eve, special traffic arrangements were made across the city with special focus on Connaught Place, its surrounding areas and other locations that witnessed high footfall and increased traffic flow.

As part of the arrangements, intensified enforcement and monitoring drive were launched across the city in coordination with local police units and PCR vans. The objective was to ensure orderly, disciplined and accident-free movement of traffic throughout New Year’s Eve celebrations, Jaiswal said.

The DCP said special checking drives were conducted at strategic locations, vulnerable stretches and major junctions with a focused emphasis on curbing life-threatening traffic violations.

The enforcement targeted offences such as drunken driving, triple riding on two-wheelers, riding without helmets, driving against the flow of traffic (wrong-side driving) and improper parking, the cop said. To check the drunk drive violations, around 100 teams were deployed during the night, Jaiswal elaborated.
