Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal yesterday paid a surprise visit to the transport authority office in Burari and after receiving a barrage of complaints, he directed the officers concerned to decentralise the fitness certification for three-wheelers and open vehicle fitness test centres across the city by next month.

Kejriwal, who was accompanied by Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot and senior officials of the department, including Transport Commissioner Varsha Joshi, also asked the officers to explore the possibility of the outsourcing the work of fitness certification.

He said the centralisation of certification is a major reason for corruption and it must be decentralised to weed out corruption.

“Received complaints about how work is only done quickly through touts otherwise it lingers for months. The fitness test centres will be opened across the city by next month. I have also sought a list of works done here and we will completely decentralise it,” He said.

He said the officers must ensure that by August 1 as many vehicle fitness test centres are opened in the city as are required while adding if 5,000 such centres are needed they must be opened.

Kejriwal directed the officials to also see that three-wheelers are not hassled in recharging their SIM cards for GPS and see that the recharge facility is available all over the city.

The Chief Minister suggests Secretary (Transport) to conduct weekly inspections of all the transport authorities offices in the city and to seek feedback from at least 50 people. The office sees a large number of people each day for permits, fitness tests besides related paper works of commercial vehicles.

Noting that why do people have to stand in long queues, Kejriwal said corrupt officers will be punished and the work done here will be decentralised. He directed officials of the department to give a list including name, address and phone numbers of people who visited the Burari office for work in the past 10 days to cross-check on the work done. — TNS
