A woman from Uttar Pradesh was rescued by the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) following a complaint by a man, hailing from Dholpur, Rajasthan, alleging illegal confinement and torture of his fiancee by her parents.

The complainant said that he was engaged to the woman during a ceremony held four years ago. However, she was being pressurised by her parents to marry another man and not allowed to meet or speak to anyone. They had even fixed her marriage with someone else for November 19 against her wish, he said.

He stated that he tried to seek help from several forums, but with no avail. So, he finally approached the DCW.

Responding to the complaint, the commission contacted the Rajasthan Police which in turn sent two personnel to her house to rescue her, but they returned without her and left the issue to be resolved by the village panchayat.

A team was constituted by the DCW and the SHO of the Baseri Police Station was asked to help, but that resulted in no success. Later, upon the instructions of the DCW chairperson, Swati Maliwal, a team of two counsellors was sent to meet Additional SP of Dholpur district.

Thereafter, the SHO was ordered by the Additional SP to solve the case on a priority basis. But the SHO informed the DCW team that the door of the woman's house was locked.

Meanwhile, the commission received information that the woman has been taken to Horipura village, in Agra and the girl’s family is planning to kill her.

The DCW counsellors rushed to the spot. In the meantime, the DCW chief contacted the SSP of Agra who provided immediate assistance through SHO, Mahila Thana, Agra. Consequently, the location of the woman was traced. She was finally rescued on November 18 from Agra after two hours.

“It is unfortunate that parents are willing to kill their own children to satisfy their false egos. I appeal to the people not to indulge in such acts. I thank the UP Police for cooperating with the DCW. The girl is now in safe hands,” Maliwal said.
