DCW rescues woman held captive by brother

NEW DELHI: In a disturbing instance, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has rescued a 50-year-old woman who was held captive in her house in Rohini by her brother for the past two years.

New Delhi, September 19

In a disturbing instance, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has rescued a 50-year-old woman who was held captive in her house in Rohini by her brother for the past two years. The woman was found in a very moving state, starved and living on terrace with piles of her own excreta around.

“The condition of the woman was pathetic. She has been starved to the extent that presently she has been reduced to bones. The terrace contained piles of the excreta of the woman. She was kept on open terrace which had no room or toilets,” said the DCW in a statement.

A team of DCW mobile helpline counsellors reached the spot where the house owners refused entry to the team. The DCW team then contacted police and spoke to the SHO who allotted police officials for the task. However, despite several requests by the rescue team the owners refused to open the gate. Rescue officials had to enter the house from the roof of the neighbour and found the woman on the terrace.

Another brother of the rescued woman informed that his sister is not mentally sound and used to live in her parental house with her mother. It is learnt that after the death of her mother, the woman was living with her younger brother who did not take care of her properly and she was treated in an inhumane manner by his family.

The woman confirmed that she was given a piece of bread only in four days for the past two years, and no one has been allowed to visit her by her brother.

An FIR has been registered in the matter at Rohini Sector-7 Police Station and she was later admitted to Ambedkar Hospital.

DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal, who, along with member Kiran Negi, met the woman in the hospital, demanded that the accused brother and his wife should be immediately arrested and taken to task. — TNS
