Delhi Assembly monsoon session begins, lauds athletes’ Commonwealth feat
House witnesses political sparring over O-Zone issue
The monsoon session of the Delhi Assembly began on Friday with members congratulating Indian athletes for their performance at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Para Games.
Speaker Vijender Gupta praised the Indian contingent, which finished fourth in the medal tally with 39 medals, including 13 gold.
The session also witnessed political sparring over the O-Zone issue after AAP MLA Sanjeev Jha raised concerns over demolitions in the Yamuna floodplains and sought legal protection for unauthorised colonies.
In response, Minister Kapil Mishra said the BJP had already taken up the matter with the authorities and reiterated that no existing houses in the O-Zone would be demolished, accusing the Opposition of politicising the issue.
During the session, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also tabled the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report for the year ended March 31, 2023, while Kapil Mishra introduced the Delhi Bed and Breakfast Establishments (Repeal) Bill, 2026.
The discussion on both will be taken up on Monday, the Speaker said.
Addressing the House, Speaker Vijender Gupta said the public accounts committee had completed scrutiny of CAG reports tabled last year and expressed confidence that examination of the latest reports would also be completed by the end of the year.
He directed the Assembly Secretariat to obtain action taken notes from departments, urging them to treat the audit findings as an opportunity to improve governance and ensure prudent utilisation of public funds.
Pilot trial of AI-powered live transcription
The Delhi Legislative Assembly has invited the Digital India BHASHINI Division to conduct a pilot trial of its AI-powered live transcription and translation system during House proceedings.
If implemented, it will be the first pilot deployment of the BHASHINI system in any legislative House in the country.
The trial will evaluate the system’s transcription and translation capabilities, after which the Assembly will decide whether to adopt and customise the technology for wider use.
