Delhi Assembly pays tribute to Maharaja Surajmal

The Delhi Legislative Assembly on Thursday held a solemn ceremony to mark the 319th birth anniversary of Maharaja Surajmal, with Speaker Vijender Gupta leading floral tributes at the historic Assembly premises.

Gupta, accompanied by Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht and MLA Surya Prakash Khatri, paid homage to the 18th-century ruler in the presence of representatives from social organisations, including the Kshetriya Gramin Manch, village heads from twelve villages, and other guests from Delhi and across the country.

Addressing the gathering, Gupta described Maharaja Surajmal as “not merely a ruler of his time, but a symbol of courage, strategic wisdom, and unwavering commitment to his people.”

He added that the late ruler’s life underscored that “true leadership rests not only in strength, but in foresight, unity, and an unwavering commitment to one’s people and nation.”

Gupta highlighted Surajmal’s military and administrative acumen in 18th-century India, citing the iconic Lohagarh Fort as evidence of his strategic foresight and governance. He noted that the ruler’s influence extended across Delhi, Agra, Aligarh, Mathura and adjoining regions, leaving a lasting imprint on the socio-political landscape of northern India.

The Speaker also pointed to the historical significance of the Delhi Legislative Assembly building, constructed in 1912, recalling its association with national leaders such as Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Bipin Chandra Pal, Lala Lajpat Rai and India’s first elected Speaker, Veer Vitthalbhai Patel. Commemorating Maharaja Surajmal at the premises, he said, symbolised the continuity of India’s democratic and institutional journey.

Deputy Speaker Bisht said Maharaja Surajmal’s life exemplified courage, resilience and dedication to public welfare, while Khatri described him as a unifying force whose ideals remain relevant in contemporary public life.
