The Delhi government on Friday announced a series of measures aimed at improving living conditions for urban poor, gig workers and slum dwellers, with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta chairing the 35th board meeting of the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DSUIB).

A key decision taken at the meeting was the development of dedicated resting centres and public utility hubs for gig workers and labourers across the city. These centres will be integrated with Atal Canteens and are expected to provide food, resting spaces and essential services under one roof. Officials have also been directed to create urinal facilities at select locations and identify suitable sites for the rollout.

Highlighting the move, the Chief Minister said the initiative emerged from direct interactions with gig workers. “The goal is to ensure that workers have access to basic facilities and a dignified environment in the city,” she said.

The government also approved a restructuring of the Atal Canteen scheme, with 100 canteens and distribution centres set to be reorganised. Revised timings will see lunch served from 10.30 am to 2 pm and dinner from 6 pm to 9.30 pm, along with operational changes aimed at improving efficiency.

On the housing front, the board cleared the allotment of EWS flats in Savda-Ghevra to 717 beneficiaries from slum clusters including Bhai Ram Camp, Masjid Camp and DID Camp in the Race Course area. Of these, 528 are categorised as eligible, while 189 fall under ineligible categories. Each beneficiary will receive Rs 1.12 lakh in financial assistance from the Centre and will be required to deposit Rs 30,000 towards maintenance.

Additionally, 221 beneficiaries from other cleared slum clusters such as Kalyanpuri, Gol Market, Okhla and Mandawali will also be allotted flats.

Infrastructure upgrades were also approved, including repairs of over 1,000 EWS flats in Sultanpuri, making housing units in Dwarka Sector 16-B habitable, and civic improvements for 7,400 flats in Bhalswa.

In an administrative move, the financial approval limit of the DUSIB CEO was increased from Rs 3 crore to Rs 10 crore to speed up project execution. The Chief Minister stressed that schemes must translate into tangible improvements on the ground, reaffirming the government’s focus on inclusive urban development.
