Delhi Govt under fire over high renovation cost of CM bungalow

A fresh political face-off has erupted in the Capital as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Delhi Government over the high cost of renovation at Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s new official residence.

Gupta, who assumed office in February, was recently allotted Bungalow No. 1 on Raj Niwas Marg — putting an end to months of speculation about her residence.

However, controversy flared up after a Public Works Department (PWD) tender revealed plans for an extensive refurbishment, with the first phase scheduled to begin in early July.

Reportedly, the proposed work includes complete rewiring of 80 light and fan points, installation of 24 two-ton air conditioners worth over Rs 11 lakh, along with 23 premium ceiling fans and 16 wall-mounted fans.

The Aam Aadmi Party responded sharply, drawing parallels between Gupta’s bungalow and the previously criticised residence of former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Sharing a news clipping of the renovation details, Aam Aadmi Party dubbed the CM’s residence “Mayamahal,” a pointed retort to the BJP’s earlier “Sheesh Mahal” label for Kejriwal’s 6 Flagstaff Road home.

“Crores of rupees will be spent on CM Rekha Gupta’s Mayamahal!” the party posted on X.

“At a time when Delhiites are grappling with inflation, job insecurity, rising private school fees, power outages, and water shortages, the CM is indulging in lavish upgrades featuring ACs, chandeliers, TVs and more — all funded by taxpayers," the Aam Aadmi Party stated.
