Delhi HC refuses urgent hearing to plea over ‘freebies’ by political parties
The Delhi High Court on Monday refused to grant an urgent hearing to a plea alleging election law violations by political parties ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections.
A Bench of Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela stated that the matter would be heard “in the normal course whenever it is listed.”
The petitioner’s counsel had sought an urgent hearing at 2 pm, but the court questioned the necessity, remarking, “Why 2 pm? You are challenging action of political parties in announcing freebies. Tomorrow, is the last day for electioneering or maybe today. Whatever impact the freebies were to have has already happened.”
The Bench added that the case would be “listed as per the standing order” and emphasised, “We are not saying anything on merit.”
The petition challenged the announcement of pre-election “freebies” by political parties, arguing that the entire electoral process was being conducted in violation of Supreme Court rulings. Delhi is set to vote on February 5, with results scheduled for February 8.
