Delhi varsity panel to probe PhD scholar’s sexual assault allegations
Accused ‘apologised’ in presence of parents at police station, says victim in plaint
Delhi University has constituted an inquiry committee to investigate the sexual assault allegations levelled by a PhD scholar from the Department of Zoology on a fellow research scholar.
The action came after a complaint was submitted through an email to the university’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) and the Proctor’s Office.
As per the contents of the complaint, the incident took place on February 3 inside the department’s Animal House facility. The complainant described it as a “grave incident of sexual assault” allegedly committed by her senior.
In her complaint, the scholar stated that, “she had gone to the Animal House around 6 pm to
conduct experimental work. The accused allegedly followed her with snacks and juice, tried to intoxicate her and forced him on her”.
The scholar further alleged that the matter was subsequently reported to the police. According to her email, the accused and his parents were called to the police station, where he allegedly “accepted his mistake and apologised” in the presence of family members.
University sources confirmed that an inquiry committee has been set up to examine the allegations in accordance with established procedures. The investigation is currently underway.
Proctor Manoj Kumar said, “The case has been forwarded to the Internal Complaints Committee, and it will look into the matter.”
