Dhaula Kuan: Traffic cop knocked down by truck

Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the Delhi Traffic Police Jitender Singh (48) died after a truck knocked him down at Dhaula Kuan. The official was on his duty.

The ASI, along with constables Pawan and Vijapal, was on his duty and checking no-entry vehicles at Dhaula Kuan.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Alok Kumar said about 7.41 am a light goods vehicle (Tata 405) bearing Delhi number was coming from Dhaula Kuan side was asked to stop as a normal practice by traffic personnel during the morning hours to check no-entry goods vehicle.

The driver of the truck stopped the vehicle but in a fraction of second he moved the truck during which the ASI got entangled in the truck, he said.

After the incident, the driver fled with the truck. During this constable Pawan stopped a car and started chasing the truck, he said.

During the chase the truck driver took a u-turn under the Mahipalpur flyover. When saw the official chasing the truck, he left the truck and started running. But, after a chase the official apprehended the driver, said the Joint Commissioner of Police.

In the meanwhile, the ASI was rushed to Indian Spinal Injury Hospital, Vasant Kunj, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment, he said.

The accused was identified as Asfaq (22), a resident of Jamal Pur village (Haryana).

The ASI was a native of Sabga VIllage (UP). He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.

Police have registered a case under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 186 (obstructing a public servant), 353 (assault to deter a public servant) 279 (rash driving) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering personal safety of others) of the IPC and 50/177, 66.1/192A of the Motor Vehicle Act, added Kumar.
